【歌詞の中のシャレ】
● And it kept in its place

keep one's place は「立場を弁えている」という意味があります。そして、時計には keep one's place(その場を動かないでいる)ことしか出来ません。

● a frown upon its face

face には「顔」の他に「(時計の)文字盤」という意味もあります。人間には frown one's face「顔を顰(しか)める」ことは出来ますが、時計に「文字盤を顰める」ことは出来ません。

● And its hands never hung by its side;

hand には「手」の他に「(時計の)針」という意味もあります。召し使いが hang his hands by his side「手を横にだらんと垂らす」のは無礼ですが、時計には「針を横に垂らす」ような芸当は出来ません。
